The reason mustang is classified as a pony car is because of the design of the body, Long, hood and short rear end.

The Mustang created the Pony Car Class and was followed by Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Dodge Challenger, the now Legendary AMC Javelin, Plymouth Barracuda and many others including Ford Capri (imported from Germany) and the Toyota Celica.

John Najjar and Philip t Clark have been credited for the name and original design of  the Ford Mustang.

On the other hand, there is another story that tells, Robert J Eggert came up with the name based on the title of a book, The Mustangs by J Frank Dobie.

Two companies in Europe names Krupp Trucks and Kreidler Mopeds were using the name Mustang on various vehicles.

Ford was offered the name Mustang from Krupp for $10,000 but, did not accept the offer. So the Mustang was sold as the T-5 until 1978.

First Generation 1964 1/2 to 1973

Lee Iacocca and Donald N Frey headed the T-5 as it was called early in development. The car was designed and developed in 18 short months from concept to design and finally production.

The Mustang was first developed as a mid-engine two-seater then later changed to the two seat and rear bench as we know it now, because the Thunderbird was a two-seater and had failed with poor sales in 1955.

Mustang used many parts also used in other models like the Falcon and Fairlane in order to reduce cost, for manufacturing.

Dealerships also benefit from reduced inventory stocking of parts due to the popular Mustang models common internal parts.

Cost, of the 1964 1/2 was $2,368. The engine was 260cubic inch V8 and was later replaced with a 289 V8. Some very early models came with 170 Cubic inch V6 from the Falcon.

After 18 months ford had manufactured more than 1,000,000 One million Mustangs.

1968 the Mustang had an optional 302 V8 engine added.

1969 The GT was discontinued and the Mach 1, Boss 302 and Boss 429 became available.

Second Generation 1974 to 1978

The idea for the second generation of Mustang was to be designed like the Ford Maverick so Mustangs would be smaller and lighter but, instead used the Ford Pinto subcompact design.

During 1973, the small size helped Mustang compete against small imports such as Toyota, Datsun and Mercury Capri in the small sports coupe market. This is the time the world was in the OIL CRISIS!

The King Cobra showed up in 1978 and was marked with the classic Ford V8 on the front fenders.

Engine and Transmission

Starting in 1974 the Mustang came with 2.3 I-4 from the Pinto and a 2.8L Cologne from The Capri.

1975 reintroduced 302CI 5.0L with C-4 automatic and power steering and brakes, this was used until 1978.

Other transmissions were RAD-4 manual and the C-3.

The Ghia was the heavier and more luxurious model with more interior sound baffling and a thick panel of Vinyl on the roof it also came as a hatchback.

The Third Generations were built on a platform that was shared with the Ford Fairmount and the Mercury Zephyr, this made the interior more roomy for passengers, Engine and trunk.

This was the base model and only the Ghia was available as an upgrade.

1981 the Cobra was re-introduced with power door locks tilt steering and Speed control and body mods to make it look more sporty.

Engines included 2.3 from the Pinto, German 2.8 V6, 5.0 V8 Windsor.

The 2.8 V6 was replaced after they ran out of motors due to supply. The new 3.3 straight 6 replaced them.

A 2.3 Turbo came along and had the power of a V8 with better fuel economy and a great sport package.

10,478 Indianapolis pace car Models were produced after Mustang was chosen in 1979 to be the official pace car.

After the oil crisis in 1979 the 5.0 was redesigned and along came 4.2 V8 less hp (120) and a 3 speed automatic.

1981 2.3 ltr turbo was the only  real performance choice you could get and it was always having issues with internal oil flow and some catching fire, then was discontinued in the USA but, still available in Canada.

1983 the 2.3 returned in the new Turbo GT with T roof and traction lock transmission along with sporty body decals. Thier was also the cobra model with a different grill and body modifications.

1982 the GT returned with the 5.0 and 160hp  5 speed manual with the recycles badges from 1979, also available 4.2 V8 but, this would be the 4.2lt with automatics last year for Mustang.

In 1986, the Mustang featured (EFI) Electronic Fuel Injection as the carburetors were phased out.

Ford was going to change the Mustang to a front wheel drive in 1987 but, Mustang fans overwhelmed the company with mail and then the mustang got a facelift and remained in the Ford stables.

The model that was destined to become the new front wheel drive Mustang based on the Mazda MX-6 then became the Ford Probe.

Interior has all the amenities of a European sports coupe and a few more to boot.

Pros: Plenty of horsepower with all new body and interior styling the sixth generation Mustang is sure to get the looks as you drive down the strip with this beauty.

Cons: Not a true family car but, if you want to go on a short trip or for your daily commute it is fine. Not great for fuel economy but, I don’t think that is why you buy a Mustang to begin with.

so many beautiful mustangs i would love them all, if only i had the funds. taught me a lot about mustangs that i did not even know very good helpful information love the videos as well. just one question, how much would it cost to get a muscle car imported to the uk?

    • Dan Labbe

I just checked with 1 shipping company that ships cars overseas and the price I was quoted for a 72 Mustang is approximately $2500 From New Jersey to The UK. But that could change depending on where you are shipping the vehicle from. Thanks for reading hotcarscoolmotorcycles.com

    Hi Dan,
I have known many people in my life, (including college coeds back in the day) who owned Mustangs – dating back to the original 64 model. Your article had such great images showing how this beloved car has changed stylistically over the past 52 odd years. It also goes without saying that the 2016 model if in a race would blow away the earlier model cars (64-65), simply as the engine has been revolutionized throughout its history and with an enormous amount of horses added under the hood compared to the original models.

What do you personally feel historically would be considered as perhaps the best and most reliable Mustang produced throughout its history? Would it be the 6th generation model produced today? Again I am basing it on reliability. No sense having a car that would always be breaking down for whatever issues having to do with components that make up the vehicle. Hasn’t it often be stated by car enthusiasts that the Mustangs produced in the late 70s/mid 80s, (during Fords’ down years) were perhaps some of the worst made in the history of this otherwise great car?
    Jeff

    • Dan Labbe

Thanks, Jeff I would have to say that anything made 86 or later is pretty reliable( Fuel injection EFI ). Up here in the north salt and sand is very heavily used on the roads so most of the older Mustangs rust away. Unless you have em rust proofed or just don’t drive them in the winter.
