Deer always seem to pick the worst opportunity to cross the road.
Deer will even freeze up in front of your car and stare at your head lights at night. Or in broad daylight just run out from the bush or a ditch on the side of the road, Why? I don’t understand.
What can we do to prevent Deer collisions from happening?
Reason for Deer Behaviour
The main reason for Deer being hit on the roads is Rutting, season. This is the time of year that the Buck males go looking for Doe Females to mate.
When you see a Deer crossing sign be cautious and keep your eyes open because Deer don’t cross at the Traffic lights.
October, November in the Fall.
April, May in the Spring.
Worst Time of Day
The bad times of day for deer near roads and causing collisions is Dawn and then again from Dusk to Midnight. Mainly because this is the when the sun is low in the sky and it is in your line of sight.
Dark roads are even worse because you don’t even see them coming.
How to Avoid Collision
Try not to use high beam lights if you see a Deer the lights will hypnotize the animal and you will have a higher chance of collision.
Don’t try to swerve around the deer if you happen to come upon one or two along the road. This action could cause you to go off the road, hit another vehicle or end up in the ditch hitting a tree or worse a rock cut or body of water.
Hopefully, we never hit a deer but, if you do, pull over in a safe place, so you do not cause an accident with another vehicle coming up at a high rate of speed.
Contact the police so they can deal with the injured deer and stop traffic from colliding with your damaged vehicle or the deer.
There is no sure way to know if you will ever see or even collide with a deer but jst be safe.
