Drag Racing at Grand Bend Motorplex.
Because it’s Fun.
Is Drag Racing Legal?
Drag Racing is legal as long as you race on a closed circuit supervised Drag racing track like the track at Grand Bend Ontario, Canada.
What is Drag Racing?
Drag racing is the competition of Cars, Trucks, Buses, Motorcycles, Tractors, Boats and pretty much any vehicle with a gas, diesel or jet fueled motor.
The vehicles line up in front of starters lights and wait until the 3 Three stage lights to change to the color green. If you get a red light you are penalized and lose time.
Speeds in Drag Racing?
The fastest time for the Top Fuel Cars are in excess of 330 miles per hour and a 1/4 mile track can be completed in 3.7 seconds.
Top Fuel cars are 25 twenty-five feet long and weigh under 2400# two thousand four hundred pounds.
My wife and I had planned the trip to Grand Bend Motorplex for a couple of weeks.
It just so happens the ONDR (Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers) Drag racing happened this weekend and a friend of ours Dave Britton has a highly modified Dodge Dart he races here and at other drag racing strips.
Grand Bend is a 4 Four Hour trip from Barrie where we live, But first, a camping trip was on the agenda.
Thursday was the last day of work because Canada Day fell on Friday, July first this year making for a long weekend!
So when I got home we got in the car and hit the #400 highway South. We stopped to eat at Wendys at the King City EnRoute they also have Subway, Tim Hortons, Swiss Chalet and a Canadian Tire Gas Bar.
Back on the road the traffic was not good West on #401, So we take the #407 Electronic Toll Route it is always faster but more costly.
We exit the #407 and get on The #403 right near the Ford plant near Oakville Ontario. The traffic really started to bunch up because of the holiday, everyone and there cars and trailers loaded with kids and pets were heading for the border of the USA.
Despite the stop and go traffic we finally got to our first destination,
Niagara Falls Canada.
We stayed at Scotts Campground on Lundy’s lane The store that also has the office smelled like (*)
By the time we got the tent set up it was getting dark and we discovered, we forgot the pillows.
Run off to Walmart and pick up two cheap pillows. So when we got back from Walmart had a smartphone party, met some nice people with two dogs had a chat, then turned in around 11pm.
Mightnight comes around and did you know the train tracks go right by the campground! So the train sounds like it’s going right through the little three-man tent we were sleeping in holy crap! I finally get to sleep then the wife has to get up because she’s got an upset tummy. She comes back and I finally get to sleep.
Canada Day Friday, July 1st, 2016.
Remember the train….. Yah 6:30 AM! the train just keeps on rolling past the campground. We got out of bed and started packing up the sleeping bags and tent and head for Morning Coffee at a place named after a hockey player Tim Horton. Whoever heard of that?
P.S. I am Canadian
The strangest thing that I saw on my drive from Niagara Falls to Dresden that day was,
Muddy the Giant Catfish in Dunnville Ontario Canada.
Part of The annual Mudcat festival late August each year in Dunnville Ontario.
Travelling across the #3 Three highway along the Lake Erie tour route guided by my trusty GPS, on the way to Dresden, Ontario to stay the night with my friend and fellow biker Dan Britton ( a true red neck Trucker and a great guy) on the way to Grand Bend for a day of ONDR (Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers).
Friday afternoon we arrive in Dresden, Ontario.
Sit around meet the neighbors, have a few drinks, do a walkabout of the historic parts of the little town of Dresden and cook dinner on Dano’s pieced together BBQ grill. But that’s just the beginning of the day.
Around 8pm we all hop into my 2013 Elantra with my wife driving and head off to Wallaceburg Ontario for The Canada Day Fireworks Display. They fired off the display from a baseball diamond and the crowd sat on the school playing field to view the colorful display. I must say for a small town It was a very impressive show! The only bad part of that was the Mosquitos, there was thousands of the little buggers. Getting out of the parking lot was a challenge as well.
After the fireworks, we started to travel back to Dresden.
On the way down the Backline Road a raccoon ran out on the road from the left and I hit it with the front drivers side of my Elantra smashing the front bumper cover and inner fender liner.
The Racoon did not survive (RIP)
So we get the Chatham-Kent Police on the phone to report the damage and they said ” You have to go back to Wallaceburg and wait for an officer to write up a report” Two hours later we are done with the police report and head back to Dresden where we were staying for the night.
Drag Racing Day At Grand Bend Motorplex.
Finally, July 2nd, the big day has arrived. We get up early because Dano forgets to turn off his alarm clocks.
We all get ready, pack up all the stuff we brought into the house, Dano gets on his 1100 Yamaha Virago and travel North from Dresden to Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend Ontario Canada.
The cost for entry into the Drag Strip is $20 for the day. If you want to camp it will cost Over $110 each person for the weekend including day passes to view the Drag racing.
The ONDR was there in their classic cars racing so the fans and families had a little car show of their own. Here is a gallery of pictures I snapped while I was walking around the Campground.
Ok so after I get done looking at all the Hot Classics and taking all the Pictures. (not all are included).
We walk over to the Drag strip to watch the cars tear up the track!
Let’s start with a few pictures of Hot Cars doing
This Car is an AMC Gremlin Manufactured by American Motors Corporation (RIP) 1988
Next Car is a Chevy Nova Pealing the rubber to warm them up for a qualifying time run.
Here a good picture of a Blue Ford Mustang Just smoking the tires for his run.
ONDR Line up at the timing lights before the run.
Drag Racing Video Footage
Now I will bet you are thinking, he went to the drag strip to watch the races, but did he get some video from the drag strip, well here it is!
